Pre-Birth to Three

                          Supporting Our Youngest Children.

'It is during our very earliest years and even pre-birth that a large part of the pattern for our future adult life is set.'

The government guidance 'Pre Birth to Three- Positive Outcomes for Scotland's Children and Families', is built on research and seeks to promote evidence-based approaches. The guidance recognises the importance of pregnancy and the first years of life in influencing children's development and future outcomes.
A focus on this period is therefore critical to achieving positive outcomes for Scotland's children and families. It is imperative therefore that all adults and young people working with young children take responsibility for ensuring the principles within the guidance are intrinsic in their every day practice.

The rights of the child, relationships, responsive care and respect are the four key principles which form the basis of this guidance. All Villa staff attend ongoing Pre-Birth to Three training and are aware that these key principles are interrelated and interdependent

Rights of the Child.
Children's rights are defined in many ways, including a wide spectrum of civil, cultural, economic, social and political rights.

Relationships.
Babies are genetically predisposed to form relationships; this is their strongest evolutionary survival mechanism.

Responsive Care.
Responsive care means knowing and accepting children and respecting that they are unique individuals.

Respect.
Children's views, values and attitudes are shaped largely by family and more indirectly by communities.

It aims to: 

  • facilitate effective partnership working for the benefit of every child
  • promote confidence
  • enable practitioners to build in time to 'think' as well as 'do'
  • inform the ways in which staff support children and families
  • improve and enhance evidence-informed practice.
